General Care Discussion :: Moving in the COLD weather!

We are moving this weekend. Saturday to be exact and the temperature here outside is VERY VERY cold 26 degrees F. So what precautions do I need to take when moving Zeke? What is the best way to move him in the cold weather? Forgot to mention we are only moving like 5 minutes away from where we are living now.

I don't know much about moving your turtles, but if you're moving by car, have him with you, and have the heating in the car up before you get in there.

A nice small box would be nice, preferrably insulated, or wrapped in a warm towel (not warm enough to burn or something).

And one thing I know for sure, don't move your turtle in water, keep him dry.

Both times I've moved it's only been 5 minutes away. Each time I put the turtles in separate tupperware containers just big enough for them to fit in, with holes in the top. I lined each container with a dish towel. I put those containers in a cardboard box, also lined with towels. Made sure the car was warmed up and they were fine. In fact, I kept them in the box for about 4 hours while we moved in and got the tank set up. They slept most of that time.

I agree with Jenaero....line the container with towels. Chances are he'll just snuggle up into a corner for the trip!

Don't transport a turtle in water since there is no way to effectively heat the water & the motion of driving will just toss him here and there (like a tsunami which stresses them out!!!). Transporting dry is the best way.

I just recently got back from Philly & transported a hatchling RES this way. It was a long trip, 9 hours, but when we stopped for lunch about mid-way thru, I took the towel out & put about an inch of spring water in the container so turt could have a drink. After lunch, I dumped the water, dried the container & turtle, put the towel back in, and off we went! It worked out really well for this long trip.

I just moved my turtle to school with me. My mom helped me make this heating pad out of sewing up a pillow case like think of fabric. Altough much smaller and filled it with plain white rice, the cheap kind you get in plastic bag. Sew up the pillow case. Heat the bag in the microw wave, until warm. Then place it at the bottom of a small box and place a towel over it. Place turtle in box cover with towel. Either make air holes in the top of the box or fold the edges over. Keeps them nice and toasty and thye sleep the whole time. I did this and it stayed warm, for a 20 min ride to my school when it was 18 degrees out. Those head warmers work too ive bin told. but the rice bag thig you can use over and over. And if its the right size it with help with sore back muscles from moveing turtle tanks. Good luck.
