General Care Discussion :: Letting turtles run around

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Sometimes we like to let Hi run around the livingroom. Last night he was out for about 15 minutes (the longest he's ever been out at one time). When I picked him up to wash the hair off of him and put him in his tank, I noticed he was kinda cold.

Is it okay to let them run around the house when it's 68-70 degrees inside?

Thanks!

You generally want to stay above, at least 72 F. Temps that cool may cause a RI.

Dry him off before you let him roam. That will help prevent him from getting cold.

Also, keep in mind that you can let him walk on your warm hands (or on you if you lie down on the floor to be with him).

And lastly, I'm sure you have a bathroom somewhere in the house that if you close the door when the heat it on, gets nice & toasty inside (or has a heat lamp to dry hair on the ceiling). You can let him walk in there too & that way there is less likelihood of him getting stepped on.

I lost one for three hours, and we block the livig room off really well. She was hiding very god and it took me tearing apart the room one area at a time moving every thing in the area to find her. That was after checking though everything several times. I let the bigger tort's out now to roam the house when it's too cold outside for them, but not water turtles anymore and noone under 6 inches. The smaller they are the easier they get sick.
