General Care Discussion :: wheezing at times

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Jan 29, 2007 9:25 am   wheezing at times

hi, i have had my turtle for about 2 months. she is 4 inches and in about a 40 gallon tank. water temp is about 80 and banking is about 95. i have a heater and a filter. every now and then when she breaths i will hear like a wheezing sound. i hear it moreso when she is sleeping in the water and she sticks her head above to get some air. i rarely hear it when she is awake. she is swiming fine and she is eating very well. her eyes are clear and her mouth is bright pink inside(no mucus at all). i don't know if this should be a concern for me or not. she spends equal amounts of time basking and in the water. any advise would be appreciated.

Hmm, That should definetely be seen by a vet, does she have a pink plastron? Like a little fade of it in the centre? Swim lopsided? I think you should see a vet befor it gets worse, because many times this has happend to people and it hasn't turned out to good.... So if you tell me your location I can get a Herp Vet for you!

i mean it happens just as she sticks her head above the water. i don't know if it may be like a snorkle effect from just a little water moving in and out when she is breathing or not.

nh00214, I've occasionally heard of others describing the noise your turtle seems to be making, especially when the head comes out of the water. Of course, if you're concerned seeing a herp vet would be a good thing to do. However, if your turtle is otherwise healthy, active and eating, it may not be anything serious.

My female RES does breath heavy when she's very active (begging, eating) and it does sound like wheezing.
