I just had my eyes opened (again) on this subject. An ordinance was passed in Dallas allowing restaurants with outdoor patios - at their option - to permit dogs to accompany their patrons. How could anyone object, right? Well, a lot of people object. The vote in the City Council was close, and I watched the letters to the editor in the newspaper, and the majority ran against it. The objection? Dogs are animals and dirty and shouldn't be around people. The feelings of revulsion ran very high. It reminded me that not all people - the majority? - are not sensitized to animals as precious, feeling beings. They are viewed as objects. It's very sad. Someday I hope it will be different.
