Where are you from? Warm climate or cold? If it is cold, then the RES should be hibernating. If it is a warmer climate, then it is possible that this is a wild RES, and it's best to let it go close to where you found it.
I'm not a big advocate of taking a wild turtle, but if it is cold and there is no way that it can survive if you put it outside, then you have to do what you have to do.
There are some classic signs of sickness, such as open mouth breathing, red swollen eyes, wheezing, lathargy, weakness, gasping for air. The best thing you could do is have him checked over by a herp vet. A decent herp vet may also have some ideas of turtle rescues or relocaters if you need.
