General Care Discussion :: Exploding Bulb

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi Everyone, I just want to share about a horrible accident with my basking lamp.

I was working upstairs when i heard a big BOOM downstairs. I knew instantly that it was my turtle's basking lamp so i rushed down. It was dark. The bulb was out and i cant see her moving!!! Then to my relief, she slowly poked her head up. I turned on the lights in the living room and she continued swimming like nothing happened. Usually when she gets scared she would hide in her nest but she continued to play around so i was relieved and left her. Later on, my husband asked me if the lamp burned down or if it exploded. I was dumbfounded coz i really didnt check!!! Guess what, when I looked, the bulb was shattered into pieces!!! There’s barely glass left in the socket. I immediately lifted up my turtle from the pond to see if she’s hurt. We examined her carefully. We let her walked in the carpet and she seemed fine. She walked with her usual pace and without difficulty. It’s a miracle that she didn’t get wounded. When we cleaned the pond we found big and small shards of glass that she luckily avoided during and after the bulb exploded. I felt like an idiot for not checking on her immediately!! I guess I’ll never found out how she managed to save herself when the bulb exploded and not swimming or stepping on those shards of glass for almost an hour before I rescued here. But, boy, am I glad she did :D

Is your bulb protected from splashes of water that your turt could create? my guess is that you may need to do some redecorating and find a way to keep the bulb in a no splash zone.

Don't feel too bad, this has happened to many other people as well. Just make sure that the cleaning got all of the glass out.

The tank is completely clean now. The guys at the pet store said that our lamp was only 75W but we used a 100W bulb. It's amazing it took almost three months before it exploded.

No, splashes of water cant reach it.

Fish21, I guess I don't understand what exactly a halogen bulb is. Would that be the heat bulb for a basking spot? I assume it provides no UVB and I'd still need my reptisun? I'd never heard of that product but it seems like a good idea given that my turtle can get pretty 'splash happy'.
