General Care Discussion :: RES and Sucker Fish

My turtle is...about 6-7 months old and has never lived in a tank with any other animals (except feeding goldfish, one of which has been in there for almost three months. He doesn't seem to even want to eat him..He pretty much ignores the little fishy) anyway...I was thinking about getting one of those sucker fish...plecostomus, I believe they're called. Will they eat each other?

As I've said before, I've had 2 plecos with my turt since I got him in sept last year, and they don't seem to have any problems with each other, however, my friend put one in with his 20yo turt, and it lasted 30 secs... I guess each turtle is different.

Yeah I had one with my turtle about a month after I got her, then I added another one almost a year ago. They don't bother her, she doesn't bother them. But I did provide them with a hiding place incase she did try to go after them. I got a cement log type of decoration and put it in the tank and it's big enough for them and the other fish to get into, but she can only stick her head in there, her shell won't fit in there at all.

my ghost shrimp lasted about 2 weeks, an amazingly long lifespan for anything that goes in the tank. plecos i don't know about, but a lot of people here have said that the turts and plecos pretty much show no interest in each other.

We placed our pleco in the tank while feeding one day, so when it was time for the turtles to go back in the tank the pleco was already there. They didn't mess with it. I think that was because since it was there it was like it belonged in the tank.

If you aren't extremely attached to the pleco you could try it, but I would guess that it might not be if but when the turtle decides to eat the pleco. If they have places to hide, they sure stand a better chance!

plecos can grow quite large--some up to 9 inches. you may want to buy a larger pleco to discourage eating. The pet stores usually sell small guys, and have a few more that have grown. My pleco is beautiful, I'm totally attached... and he's got a little divit in his back fin, in the shape of a pointy-upper jawed bite. *sigh* I encourage him to grow ASAP. I think they tasted him and then said "nahhh." Go for it! Say I.
