my RES has a shell that looks like you would like to take sand paper to it

How do you make it look nice?

do you have a picture?
He could have algae or he could possibly have shell rot?
Whatever you do dont use sand paper..

Did you get your RES this way? If so, perhaps s/he wasn't living in the best of conditions. The condition of the shell will reflect the habitat and diet a turtle has had. Assuming your turtle has no specific shell condition, a good diet, proper habitat (lighting, clean water, temps, basking time, etc.) and time should improve your turtle's shell.
