General Care Discussion :: Hey guys ;)

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Feb 20, 2007 10:46 pm   Hey guys ;)

I havent been on here in a while.. Well heres an update on my turtle. When i left, my turtle was taken to the vet, and i never told you guys the results of that. It went well, all she needed (pretty sure now its a she) was a vit A shot. I never took her in for a follow up, because of cost, and because i found an alternative way to give her vit a. I just take a Cod Liver gel pill, poke a hole in it, and squirt it on the pellets i feed her. Of coarse, oil rises on top of the water, so i feed in separate container. Yeah, ever since then she's been pretty healthy eating only pellets lately, but basicly she has had a varied veggie diet. He swollen eye has gotten alot better, and i sometimes give eye drops as preventitave. Is there such a thing as too much vit a? Well, for all those w/ turts w/ eye probs due to vit a deficiancy, i hope i gave you a good sltaernative to the vet.. It really works.. But yeah lately i have been looking for a good home for my turtle.. Been seraching around and a couple places i called dont accept turtles so yeah. Ive yet to call the turtle rescue to see what happens w/ that. But even they only provide housing til they find a home for it. Its my last option, i would rather give her to a home, than to people who will yet again continue my job lookin for a home for her, but oh well. Im on my last options, my vet.. nature centers... all dont have anyone who wants turtles. If anyone is in the area my turt is about 4 inches since i last checked a month ago, about 61 grams and has a wonderfully sweet, loving personalitie. I feel really bad for her, she still being in a 10 gallon... I just dont have room for her. Thanks for reading this update.

I'm glad your turtle is doing better! FYI: another thing you can give your turtle for vitamin A is cooked sweet potato or squash (my turtle LOVES both of these). Too much supplemented vitamin A can be toxic to them. Although, I do like your idea of the cod liver oil, even if it is messy. :)

Why do you have to give your turtle away? It sounds like you are making so much good progress with her!

Carrots are also good for vitamin A! Where do you live?

Becasue i live in an apartment and my mom is making me give her away. She thinks they are wild, meant to be outdoors in a lake, and that all the bacteria from when i clean the tank could make us sick. And now the worms... she was disqusted..

Yeah i live in South Florida.

More frequent water changes can help all that. I understand your mom's concern about bacteria, but as long as turts are kept clean, they do just fine. I wish you lived locally so you could come by my house with your mom so she could see Sheba. She could see for herself that there are turts out there that live happily & healthy for many, many years with the proper care! If she could just see how cool Sheba is to have around (Sheba loves visitors), then maybe she wouldn't be so hasty about you getting rid of your turtle. Good luck!
