General Care Discussion :: Shell Rot.

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I know this has been talked about in a couple of threads, but I am a little confused and need a quick answer. Anyway, shell rot is like little white spots that grow in the turtles shell, right? I think my turtle has this but I can't take a picture. I want to put this hibiclens stuff on him, but I don't know if that's the right product to use. Is it, and where can I get it?

There are lots of pics on Austin's turtle page that hopefully will help you see what is normal & what is not:

White spots are not always a cause for concern. Sometimes they are hard water stains or a sign that the turtle will shed soon (see the pics above for examples). Both of those are not harmful, they just aren't very attractive.

If you do need to treat for fungus or bacteria, Hibiclens is the right product. You get it at the (human) drugstore. I found it at Walgreens.

This is what has been said about how to treat if you've just got a few questionable spots: Moisten the spots with water, gently rub some hibiclense on the spots with a Q tip, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then rinse until the (not too warm, not too cold) water runs clear.
