General Care Discussion :: How many watt bulb for a heat lamp?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the stupid question. I do not have access to a thermometer right now. I will get one as soon as possible.

Out of curiosity I have a small RES in a 10 gallon (I will update the tank as soon as possible). Lighting consists of 2 9 watt UVA/UVB bulbs and a heat lamp (regular incadescent bulb). I currently have a 25watt bulb for the heat lamp and wonder if that is adequate.

Can someone give me an idea if the 25w is putting out enough heat? Thanks in advance.

The only way to know if the heat lamp is putting out enough heat, really, is to measure it with a thermometer. There are so many variables - ambient room air temperature, distance from the basking area, exact type of bulb, fixture, etc - that you just can't assume anything without measuring it.

You should be able to pick up an inexpensive thermometer at the pet store. Be sure and leave it on the basking area long enough to get a good reading.

When positioning the heat light, you'll need it close enough to the turtle to warm the basking area to the upper 80's or 90 degrees, but not so close that the turtle could touch it and burn himself.
