General Care Discussion :: She layed eggs in the backyard!

Hello, My adult female has layed some eggs in the dirt in our backyard. I do believe that they might be fertalized by our male res. The weather has been warming up a bit out here in southern Cali, so it's not freezing. Is there a chance that her eggs may survive and actually hatch?
Both of my res's are usually in an indoor set up. When it warms up during the year I have them in an outdoor habitat.

How old is your RES? It's usually a bad idea to raise hatchlings (overpopulation, habitat requirements, etc) and if its your turtle's first clutch, it might also not be the healthiest batch.

Wow about your turtle laying eggs in your backyard!!

I agree with Steve about overpopulation....you may want to destroy any clutches she lays. Unfortunately RES's tend to "take over" areas & drive out other turtle breeds which has started to be a real problem in some areas of the world because now people are keeping the RES's till they get too big then just releasing them in the wild in non-native places like Poland (RES's are originally from the mouth of the Mississippi river).

My female is about five years old. I have no intrest in having more res. I have two now because I rescued them. I adore both of them but they have been no walk in the park.
I saw her eat two of her eggs in her tank a week ago. So it doesn't surprise me that she went ahead and released the rest outside. I'm thankful that she at least got them out. I would hate for them to stay inside of her for too long and in turn make her sick.
