General Care Discussion :: shedding

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Quick question... I notice on my turts necks that there is excess skin. Also I see a lot of this floating around the tank before the filter takes care of it. Is this just normal shedding... This is my first experience with shedding so I just want to make sure this is the normal process.

Some amount of skin shedding is normal but if you're seeing a lot of it and seeing it floating around in the water it probably means the water's too warm. The most common cause for excessive skin shedding is water that's too warm.

Since you turtles are practically grown now, you can take the water temperature down. For a grown turtle, 75 degrees is fine. Some keep it a few degrees cooler than that.

The water has been at 74 degrees for the pas couple of months and they seem to like it where it is. They bask and eat normally. I don't think the shedding is too excessive, I just wanted to make sure that this was normal shedding. Thanks for the info Spotsmama, you're always a good help!
