how do i test for ammonia levels? i just bought a 5 in 1 test kit. it tests for nitrate, nitrite, GH total hardness, KH carbonate hardness, pH acidity. do i need another test?

I'm afraid you do need another test! I'm surprised that a five test kit didn't include ammonia - it's a biggie over here.

:( oh. ok. i'll get one a.s.a.p. turtle ownership doesnt seem like a big thing in new zealand. not much help at the pet store. lucky i've got you guys! :D

Some pet stores/aquarium shops do water basic testing for free. Call them up to find out... of course they might want you to buy some water treatments :D

Turtle ownership isn't a biggie over here either. But fish ownership is huge. That's where all the products are.

Yea, turtle care is kind of like a combination of fish care and reptile care. :)
