General Care Discussion :: fish with turtles.

i noticed in a picture someone else had sent in, that they had goldfish in with their turtle. wouldnt he kill them? we want to put something in our tank with our turtle but are unsure what would be compatible. any idea's?

Goldfish are fatty and have no real nutritional value. If you want to put something in w/your turtles, go for feeder guppies or rosy red minnows. They're cheap, and if they get eaten, they're good for your turtle.

I've tried everything from fish and snails to huge crayfish..they ALL end up as dinner for the turtles.

well i bought ten goldfish with my turtle and 9 of them died but i have not found the reason why they died
could be the water temperature, water quality
but it was definitely not the turtle's fault. the turtle was scared of the fishes. put turtles with turtles

It could have been anything. I can't keep goldfish alive to save my life. I know they're sensitive to water quality. I also know they can live in heated water as well. Past that, I'm not sure.

My turtles only go after the bigger fish. I've got about 10 feeder somethings (i think they start with a D, but i can't remember). they're small gray fish, and my turtles aren't interested in them at all. they're kinda fun because they'll often swim around the tank together and it looks really cool.

The only thing my turtles haven't eatten that we put in the tank is the pleco thry are great at cleaning but the poop a lot themselves it drives me crazy

When I first got my turtles, I bought some feeder fish for them (4 of them)... one died of natural causes and the other two were eaten... but the fourth fish is still alive (since November... 4 1/2 months)

I named the fish "survivor"... and for whatever reason both turtles leave it alone.

I put in a dozen rosy red minnows in with my turtles, but I also made a section under the basking platform that allows the fish a place to hide. Last I checked there were still at least 6 minnows swimming around and the turtles don't seem to chase them too much anymore. They have a hard time catching them anyways. lol!

Goldfish, I learned, are not tropical freshwater and prefer cooler water. Who knew? I had lots of fish in there. They never ate any, until I cleaned the tank. Then they ate most of them. Now I have a pleco, two guaramis and a female beta in there. Thje trutls don't seem to mind the pleco, who occasionally I've seen almost on their shells. He will be sucking the top of the tunnel they have while they are inside. Also, sometimes they share lettuce.

...but deep down i know it's just a matter of time....

There were four big minnows in Spot's tank left over from last summer. I guess it was 6 weeks ago that he finally ate one of them. It was so awful to see that I took the other three minnows out. They are now living peacefully in a separate little aquarium of their own.

They had been around so long that I had gotten to think of them as pets.

When we were feeding ours fish (the vets advised against it because of parasites that the fish carry) they would always leave one in the tank.

I don't feed my turts live fish either. They don't eat fish that much in the wild, and I think what they need nutritionally can be gotten from other sources.
