General Care Discussion :: Throwing up

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Apr 01, 2007 6:38 pm   Throwing up

Hello all, i have a question. Today i woke up in the morning and fed both of my turtles. They get their share of pellets and greens, one of my turtles happened to eat REALY fast today, he gobbled up 6 pellets in less than 20 seconds and caught 4 fish yesterday night! He also seemed realy freaked out by me today. Usually him and his brother dont mind me walking up to the tank, but today he freaked out and dived straight into the water. He's also been throwing up little chunks of food every now and then. Common sense tells that he is stuffed, he didnt poop today either. He has been basking more too. Hopefully this will all go away by tommorow. But i was wondering, why would he all of a sudden be terrified of me? And is there a way i could get his tummy feeling better?

Thanks, :)

I always pre-soak the pellets for a minute or so to get them soft. If they eat them too fast while they are still hard and crunchy, they will expand inside their stomach, and they will either throw them up, or get a bad bellyache, which would cause them to get a little stressed/frantic.

I usually feed my reptiles a few hours after the lights come on and no later than 3 or 4 hours before the lights go out. That way they get a chance to bask and digest their meals. With basking lizards, if they eat too close to lights out, the food can rot in their stomachs which will cause some gas and discomfort and even vomiting.

well my turtle is a FAT pig. one time i fed him about 3 pellets. since they are large i ussaly cut them in little pieces since he is only a baby. he gobbled ALL of them in 10 seconds! then he threw up about 3 and ate it back again. so it may be your turtle ate way too fast.

Yup, he's stuffed. When they over-eat, they throw up. Sheba has done it before too.
