General Care Discussion :: Looking for a Turtle

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to these boards, but I have been "lurking" and reading many posts for a few months - ever since we got our slider a few months ago. I have found lots of your posts very helpful as we learn the ins and outs of slider care. We now have a complete tank set up (lighting, basking rock, a good filter and water heater, and plenty of space to swim) for our turtle, Webster.

We live in northern NH but we bought all of our turtle supplies and our turtle in PA (we just moved to NH from PA). The store that we purchased Webster from was extremely conscientious in taking care of the sliders they were raising... so Webster is a very healthy young (4") male slider. Now we would like to get a second turtle and I don't know where to look... We want to get another young, healthy slider... can anyone on here recommend a good pet store in NH or VT? Or does anyone happen to know a slider in this area that needs a good home?

Thanks so much.

Here's a link for turtle adoption sites that's pretty good:

www.turtlehomes.org.

Do you see something in your area? I understand they're very careful about who gets a turtle - which is good - high standards.

Hello, Nelson27! :) I'm just outside the Manchester, NH area. I know of a few decent places around here, but they're pretty spotty when it comes to having turtles. The largest pet store that I go to is in Salem which is down rt93 south all the way to the MA border. They often have RES but usually only adults (5"+). The different Petco's around here have some nice looking sliders from time to time as well. Also if you ever need a vet, there's one in northern Concord who has some experience with herps (not an expert, but he's willing to treat them). I'll try to find his info if you ever need it.

Where abouts are you in Northern NH?

Thank you SpotsMama and DavidY for the info... we'll be looking into the turtlehomes adoption...

DavidY - thanks for the info on pet stores. There is one pet store in our town (Littleton) but the sliders they keep are really unhealthy and not well taken care of at all. I'm a little scared to attempt to "rescue" one because I'm afraid they're in such bad shape that I won't be able to help.

We don't get down "south" very often, but next time we do we'll have to make a stop in Petco...

Let me know if you stop by any of the pet stores and you see any young healthy sliders!

Hi Nelson, geography was never my strong suit, so bear with me here. Is New Hampshire within any reasonable distance of Pennsylvania? This winter 200 baby turtles were rescued from a river there and they've been remarkably healthy. Many have been adopted but many were still in need of a home, last I heard. They were rescued by george. Another forum member, mybrosteve, took some of them and sometimes still communicates with george. Last I heard mybrosteve was also still trying to find homes for the ones he had.

Here's the last link I saw on the subject. If you're curious, do a search for george's posts. it's a fascinating story.

This is another source for some good turtles!
