General Care Discussion :: Leo's eye was "stuck" closed this AM...

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Jun 12, 2007 12:23 pm   Leo's eye was "stuck" closed this AM...

I just want to know if this has happened to anyones baby before...

Leo is almost 2" and basks, eats, swims normally, water temp is close to 80", has nice warm basking area..(not too warm).. (NO swollen eyes either) No problems so far..but;

this morning I woke up and took the towels off the babies aquariums to turn on the basking lights and little Leo was sleeping, one eye opened and the other didnt...

I waited a sec.. and he still didnt open the 2nd eye?! Soooo, I didnt want to "manually" make it open so I put a couple drops of Nature Zone Turtle Eye Drops in his eye (says they are for opening and cleaning inflamed eyes) ; well after less than a minute it opened. And since then, he has been FINE. Ate breakfast normally, swam around a bit, and is now basking.

Should I worry? Do they sometimes just "stick" like that?

TYIA!

That happened with one of my boxies once. I think he just got something in it or he got eye gunk built up while he was sleeping. He was fine after I swabbed it with a wet qtip.

I've noticed that happening every once in awhile with all my RES. Particularly if they've fallen asleep out of the water.

Yea reptiles eyes can be like that escpecially if they're concentrating on something that's off to their side. When that happens the other eye might as well be closed 'cause their giving all their attention to that one thing.

Yup, this can happen.....when Sheba basks for a long time & gets dried out for several hours on her basking dock, sometimes she gets eye "crusties" just like a person who wakes up in the morning. She rubs her eye with her hand, and VOILA! It opens right up.

Don't worry.....if you haven't had any problems since, then it was prolly just eye goop that dried on the eyelid ("crusties").

Whew~ Thanks you all!
That makes me feel better. His eyes werent crusty that I could see...(and he didnt rub them..) BUT he never sleeps underwater, lol. Its always on the dock so far.
So that must be it! :)

Being out of the water, the air can cause the lids to dry out and stick together.

Thanx, Marisa. I "duh" didnt realize that?! lol Makes sense. Good thing this evening though... I stole a piece of plastic log with fake plants from Tobis aquar. and cleaned it and put it in Leo's tank and he is ACTUALLY SLEEPING UNDER WATER for the 1ST TIME!! WOO HOO! Hanging on top of the plant and the dock end :)

He seems MUCH happier and has something more to do!

(I was NOT prepared for this new one...as he was kinda dumped on me, so Im adding as I can! Least my UVA/UVB heat lamp came in today! He seems to LOVE it!)

Im already in Luuuuv!
