General Care Discussion :: Need some tank advice...

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I've about 10-15 gallon tank, really small one and I just found a really cheap 120 gallon tank, which is HUGE! and I think it may be too much for a 3 inch RES and a few guppies, what do you say?
Should I find a smaller one, about 30-50 gallon maybe?
And I'm also thinking of buying 1 more turtle so mine wont be bored..

Go as big as you can!!! And I wouldn't get another RES, the rule of the thumb is 10 gallons of tank size per inch of turtle shell So with two full grown RES, you will need a 240 gallon tank!!! While if you stick with one you will only need a 120 gallon one.

Good luck with your RES!!

P.S. It will love the extra space!!!

A really cheap 120-gallon tank? Make sure it doesn't leak and GET IT. You won't have to upgrade for a long, long time, if ever.

Please don't think your turtle is bored. Two turtles in the same tank are often more of a problem than it's worth. If you think your turtle is bored, make the interior of that 120-gallon tank interesting for your turtle.

Turtles are actually rather solitary creatures, if you read up on people's stories of housing turtles together, you'll see that a lot of times, even with adequate space, there are still serious aggression problems which lead to expensive second set ups or the person having to give away one turtle. So, you'd probably be best with one turtle. And yes, get the tank!! If it's a deal, then I'd buy it in a heartbeat. LIke Marissa said, with a tank that large, you can get creative with decorating it, make sure you put a few floating plants on the surface so your turtle has someplace other than the basking area to rest from swimming. A tank that big is a big change, so it will be good for your turtle to have those plants to rest on. He's a lucky guy to be getting such a big tank!!!

I recently met up with the kid that owned my two turtles for 7 years, and apparently for a short time they lived together in a 55 gallon tank, and they fought viciously, biting onto each other's necks and not letting go. His father's brilliant solution was to tap them with a wooden spoon until they stopped. Not cool. Get the 120 if it's in good condition (make sure your floor is strong enough to support it!) and unless you can afford to maintain a second setup, stick with one turtle. The 120 will be a paradise for him, and you can take advantage of the extra space to do all kinds of cool customizations that would take up too much space in a smaller tank. If you worry he's getting bored throw in some feeder fish! Napoleon spends all day alone and it doesn't seem to bother him at all, just basks and swims and basks and swims...
