I'm still looking at what tank I want to get. Are 50 gallon tanks seriously like 200-300 dollars? For 5 pieces of glass and some plastic holding it together?

In most pet stores yes. Do you have a Meijer or Wal-Mart? They have a 55 gallon aquarium KIT for $150 (I think its more like $130 but with taxes and everything it will be around $150).

Julie..yeah they can be! Try looking on the internet on Craigslist for your area and see what you can find under (animals, reptiles, supplies) There have been a couple 50 gallons around my area for 50 to 100 bucks! And DONT let someone CON you into getting a reptile tank...they are no good. You need a plain old fish tank! :) Good luck with your hunt!!!

At one point I got the Walmart 55 gallon kit and it was really pretty good. The filter wasn't of any use, though, for a turtle.

I didn't figure anything in the kit would be good for a turtle but for $150 that is the cheapest I have seen for a tank. Pet Supplies Plus hassome tanks for under $100 but I don't remember the sizes and I don't know how wide of a range that store has. PetSMart and Petco's tanks are just outrageous.

In the walmart kit the tank itself was good, the heater, and the light fixture. I did have to buy the basking platform, UVB bulb and heat bulb since the kit was really intended for fish. I think I only paid $100 for it but that was a couple of years ago.

Shop around. $200-$300 sounds like it is WAY too much for just a 50 gallon tank.

Remember though that you have to buy a stand for a 50 gallon because they are fairly heavy & have to be supported properly so they don't leak.

Lastly, keep in mind that a reptile pet setup costs a little more *upfront* but once you get the setup, that the maintenance care is very low....cheaper than a cat or a dog in the long run. :)

i would just look for a tank itself. that 50 gallon probably costs so much because it comes with a lot stuff for fish. which u dont really need it all.

Like Safdar said...Petco is having a $1 per gallon fish tank sale but it ends in a few days. So a 50gallon tank will cost $50, brand new. Can't get much better than that! :D

Go to Petco and get the 50 gallon like everyone said, and they have a metal tank stand that is meant for a 55 gallon tank on top and there is a little shelf underneath to hold two ten gallon tanks, it cost me $55. So you could get the tank and stand for about a 100 bucks.

55 dollars. I was going to go to PetCo, but I found one closer that is the right dimensions that I need. It's like a square rather then a rectangle, because I cant have anything bigger than 26 inches in length at the moment. But by the time I need a bigger tank, I'll have the room because im moving soon. Im really excited about my turtle, a little frustrated at the amount of money i've spent, and a little scared because I want to do a good job taking care of it
