General Care Discussion :: Ichigo the rescue - Update

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Image

Ichigo went in for an Esophagostomy today. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. We are pureeing her food and mixing it with all her meds and injecting it through the tube straight in to her stomach. We are to do it for five days, then call the vet to give her an update and see how to proceed. She is already breathing less with her mouth after pooping once and we are hopeful that this will finally do the trick!

Thanks for your encouragement guys!
I don't know, once you take on an animal that needs help, you kind of have to go all the way, right? I mean it doesn't make any sense to do anything other than that. I'm sure you guys would do the same.

I hope so too! Ichigo is quite the fighter, I'm glad he's doing better.
Thanks for the updates, it's really amazing the lengths you're going to to help this turtle, he's one lucky guy.

Yes, she is very big. Her shell is a good 10 inches in length. I wish she could tell me what her life has been like and where she has been till now.

Wow, I can't believe what you are going through! I applaud anyone willing to take on such a challenge; most people would have just let any animal die. I've seen people go to great lengths for dogs and cats, but I am really impressed that you (and your vet) are doing all of this for Ichigo! She is one very lucky little turtle! I hope she continues to pull through and reward you with a very long and happy life!

Hi everyone!
Thanks for all the replies.
You will be happy to know that Ichigo has started pooping out everything that was stuck inside. We saw a good amount of hair! Where the heck did that come from!?
We are to keep tube feeding her for another 5-6 days, then cut back and try to get her to eat on her own.
Computer Gremlin - our vet is pretty cool. She even does fish medicine! At first I wasn't sure how good of a doctor she was going to be but I am convinced now that she knows exactly what she is doing and is a very good vet. I am probably going to switch my three cats and my dog to her as well.

It's good that Ichigo (Strawberry?) is starting to respond to treatment. Perhaps a hair or two fell into the tank when someone leaned over it. Hair can really bind a turtle up inside and cause problems.

It didn't look like human hair. Too short and thin/whispy. Looked like some kind of animal hair......
