General Care Discussion :: Buddy is pretty sick

As many of you know, Buddy has been sick for several weeks now. Today was his fourth Turtle Doc visit in the last month or so. He was originally treated for intestinal parasites, but had little improvement after that treatment completed. Today the doc says he has a bacterial infection preventing him from wanting to eat or do anything. Says he is a pretty sick turtle Over the last month Buddy has lost a TON of weight, the vet says it is pretty uncommon for them to lose weight as fast as he is. He got three shots this morning in the butt (Vit B complex, Vit A, and Antibiotic), he also got put on a 20 day antibiotic treatment plan. Since he is not eating, and has zero energy, the Doc put him on a strict diet, check out the yumminess Buddy gets over the next few weeks via feeding tube. Mmmmmmm



I sure hope the little guy gets better soon, he has been sick since I picked him up.

I hope he gets better too. And I still eat the stuff that Buddy is going to get. (No I'm not 2 as much as I act like it)

Baby food is really high in sugars, But I assume that's okay since it was recommended by a vet.

Sorry to hear about Buddy. Sounds like you're going all out for him. How did your vet come to the conclusion of a bacterial infection? Was it only from the lack of appetite? I'm not disputing your vet, but all the stress and meds will likely suppress any appetite.

Thanks for the well wishes everybody. I will keep you updated. The vet same to the conclusion basically cause buddy's parasite treatment (which he took a stool sample for) did not bring his appetite back and he lost so much weight. Also, buddy has had some wierd discharge coming from his mouth and nose, so the Vet was pretty certain what it was. He said he could do some bloodowrk, but the treatment results would be the same regardless so he advised against it. I trust the guy, he seems pretty cool, and really likes turtles, he has several of his own. He is recommended by the Colorado Herpatological Society or something like that, thats how I found him. Supposed to be the best turtle doc in Denver/colorado area. I just hope my little guy snaps out of it and starts acting normal. he has been sick pretty much since I picked him up so I havent even got to enjoy him much.

It looks like you guys are going through something similar to us. Our turtle rescue has a feeding tube as well, though for different reasons. We have been joking that she looks like a Borg (Star Trek) with the tube.....


We've also had our rescue for about a month and a half and she has been very sick for most of the time.

Doc_Moore_J- I'm also in the Denver Metro area. Which vet are you taking him to? Mine used to go to Dr. Fitzgerald at Alameda East until I moved to the other side of town. I'm still looking for a herp vet I like on this end of town.

hdaisog, I am taking him to Dr. Shiarella at the Western Animal Clinic. Alameda is much closer, but had bad experience with them with my dog, plus they were not recommended by these guys, so I figured he would be better.
