General Care Discussion :: Hate to do it but...

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Feb 08, 2009 12:41 pm   Hate to do it but...

I cant keep my two turtles. When i first signed on as a turtle owner, no one told me the necessities for caring for turtles except to just put them in a bowl and they will grow to fit the tank. then i found this site and i knew that there was no way i could get them a big enough tank, but i would care for them until then. Now that time has come. One of my guys has to go, and i thought someone on here would be a better owner than some random person. I live in North Carolina and my parents are very willing to help me get rid of them (they don't want to care for my pets when i go off to college, but they will if they have to). the little guy is about 4 inches long. It might be a good idea to put him alone or with a larger turtle since he is the dominate one of the pair. if you are interested, please PM me...

Thanks

Call local Middle and High Schools. Ask for Science or Biology teachers. It always seems they have a huge tank hidden in the back somewhere and are always look for a turtle.

unfortunately, I have tried both of those. Craigslist dosent allow the sell/trade of animals and none of the biology teachers have tanks, nor would they want to... Too much extra work on top of the work they already have. I know Im being really picky but I would love it if someone on here could take him, or else it might need to be euthanized and I don't plan on that at all.

Why are you trying to sell or trade your turtle? Craigslist does have an animal section for people to adopt animals. You won't be able to sell it but you will be able to find it a good home. Most of the people on this site already have their hands full with their animals. You'd be better off going through Craigslist and doing a home visit to ensure that the turtle will have a good home.

Hey Ferd, I hope you'll be able to re-home them. As you know, RES don't need to much work once everything is setup. Maybe family or friends might be interested?

Oh, I was told that you cant post animals on Craigslist at all. guess i read it wrong. Aye Steve, i have asked friends and family, but everyone i know is going off to college and they don't have room and/or aren't allowed. fortunately, I can keep the one, just i need to move the other out as soon as possible. I will check on Cragslist and see what i can do. Thanks for the help everyone. I hope to get back on the website, just been really busy...

Not to be the bad guy.....But how do you get a pet without knowing anything about it?
Plus you mentioned a "bowl"!Even if you have one turtle, that turtle will need 10 gallons of water x inch of carapace (a little exagerated but that's the rule of thumb),basking area with both UVB and UVA light, and proper filtration.
If you cannot provide that, i suggest giving them BOTH to someone who can!

Well, it was a gift. I didn't really have a say in the matter. My aunt who was dying of cancer bought them for me. Also, the store didn't do returns so that's why I kept them. Either keep an or set em free in the middle of winter in kentucky. Uhh, no they aren't in a bowl dude... I've had the pair for nearly 3 years now in a 20 gallon high tank. I've been on the website a few times (since mid 2006). I was told that all I needed was a bowl, but I never put them in one

jozzep you would be surprized at hopw many people obtain critters without knowing anything about them. thats why there are so manny horror stories of turtles being kept in horrible conditions. most people find them think, hey thats cool as the person who's selling said turtle who also doesnt know anything about turtles and bad info gets passed along without a second thought because most people assume that the person who is selling whatever knows what they are talking about even though they could just be stringing a bunch of bull crap just so you'd buy it.

and yeah he didnt say that he was keeping them in that condition just thats what he was told.

Ferd if you can find a way to get that turtle to Houston I'll take it! Amy glad you defended him, I just got my RES the day Hurricane Ike hit Houston and I had no clue how to take care of her until I was able to get electricty back and get on this website. My turt was already two years old and in horrible conditions when I rescued her, she's now in a 40 gallon breeder tank but I found her in a 5 gallon Eclipse that was so filthly you couldn't even see a turtle in it. I had a spare 15 gallon tank in the garage and kept her in that for two weeks until I could upgrade her. You are right, most people don't research and really don't care. I'm glad my turt's former owner didn't care because now I have her and she is awesome and happy!
