Has anyone here ever used "turtle toys"? By turtle toys I mean floating cork flats, logs, or cactus tunnels. We also have an air stone that the male turtle, Hurricane, likes to hide and sleep under.

Does anyone know of actual tank objects that a turtle can manipulate or push around like a toy? They like the tunnel but they've also cracked it from pushing it around, and my female doesn't pay the air stone much mind. I just want to know if anyone has taken steps to really enrich turtles while they are young.

Well, some people have tried ping pong balls.

I don't think turtles can get bored though. They just don't. They're not like dogs, for example, that can become destructive if not kept entertained.

My turtles both enjoy river rocks. I bought some flat pieces that almost look like slate from a pet store and they love to push them around the tank. My male turtle also has a little "coral" statue in his tank that he enjoys knocking over and then standing back up again.

While I don't think turtles get bored in the human sense, it is nice to have a few objects to stimulate them in the tank.

Also, with your tunnel, just make sure the turtles can easily fit through it, there have been turtles who have out grown their caves and drowned when they got wedged in.

The ping-pong ball idea is kinda funny. If I have any lying around, I'm gonna try that out.

Yeah, I've got the river rocks too.

They are a microbe away from killing the tunnel and outgrowing it, which is why I just ordered a bigger one they can both fit in. Well, they can both fit in the one they have right now, but Typhoon doesn't let Hurricane in the tunnel. I am upgrading the tank right now with a lot of artificial plants, and a basking log, so, hopefully they'll be less "bored".

I use solid plastic cat toys. Roundish ones so they roll around the bottom of the tank. The girls love to bite at them and scrape them.

Edit: I tried one of those mini plastic easter eggs, and they were very intimidated by it. They probably won't like the ping-pong balls either. I did however a few minutes ago give them a white and orange glass marble, and they both like having it there. Hurricane keeps climbing on it. I'm sure they'll start pushing it around when it's been there for a while.

Most turtles like moving water - a waterfall type filter or bubbler. They'll swim back and forth in the current and bite at the bubbles.

theartbook, where did you find a large enough tunnel? My guys are getting big now and they'd love a bigger tunnel. Right now, this one is too small, but it has no bottom. So they push under it and lift it over themselves, then swim and it goes crashing to the bottom. A bit nervewracking, I keep waiting for the tank to explode.

Haha... I've noticed they do that to the air stone from time to time.

I don't have a high enough water level for a filter. My hatchlings get upset if the water is any deeper than it is right now.

The tunnel I have now, the cactus tunnel, I got at a local pet store. The bigger tunnel I am getting mailed to me is a turtle hut from petdiscounters.com It doesn't have holes like the cactus tunnel, and I really don't know if the cactus tunnels are sold bigger than the one I have. (Six inches by two inches. My female can just barely turn around nowadays. I never keep it submerged underwater for just that reason). It's like, seven inches long, three inches high and five inches wide. They won't need another one for a long time.

I'm about to take pictures of the tank set up soon, anyways, so, I'll remember to post up the tunnel too.

It's sort of like yellow bone colored, and well, has lotsa holes in it. Best though for turtles two inches long or smaller. Also good for snakes and frogs.

Oh, I found a thing at the petstore the other day that's supposed to be a fun fish toy that they can push around, and Sam really likes to push it around! it's his favorite color purple, and when I first put it in, he looked at it like what the heck is this thing? I dont know why, but my turtle really likes pushing it around and then standing on it. Silly turtle. It's called a BiOrb. It's a tank decoration. I dont know how useful for fish it w ould be, but for turtles it makes a fun "toy"

Neither of my turtles like balls much. Goblin loves mirrors, he cant look away from his reflection for very long. Im wondering if it would be safe for me to attach the mirror to his aquarium on the inside.
