When I was at the aquarium today, I was looking at the baby turtles, and I saw one that looked very sick and about to die, one of the employees took him and chucked him in the garbage still alive.

What would you do?

Would you rather flush him down a toilet rather then let him rot in the garbage?

Flushing him probably wouldn't accomplish much since they can hold their breath, he'd just end up in the sewer system. Truly, if he is sick, he should be taken to a vet and they can either try to heal him or humanely euthanize him. I would report the employee as that is a cruel act towards an animal, which can get the store in serious legal problems.

I've been through this incident so many times every time I visit the pet shop who sells the baby RES. Once I noticed the sick baby, I ask the worker and show the sick baby, I was thinking he gonna separate the sick baby but the worker just grab the baby and throw in garbage Just like that?? I can't say a word.

Well, at least I'm not the only one that feels like this. People around me think I'm crazy for how good and humane(at least that's how I see it) I treat pets no matter what the size. I would have definantly dug that turtle out of the trash and then proceeded to get ahold of the manager. I can't stand how people think that just because the animal doesn't have a way of showing emotion, that it doesn't need to be taken care of.

I definitely wouldn't flush it down the toilet. Depending on the size, it could get caught in the pipes and drown. Throwing it away isn't an option either.

I would call the authorities like Jax suggested. Unless the turtle is actually dead, they can't just throw it away.

You could also contact PETA they might be able to help or give suggestions. I think I would have said if you are just gonna throw him away would you allow me to take him. Maybe I can save him.

Lol, whether or not something is animal abuse doesn't depend on what religion you are.

Throwing it away is absolutely animal abuse. It's the same as dumping puppies on the highway. I would skip calling the manager because they probably already know about it, otherwise the employee wouldn't have done it in front of customers. I would call the local humane society and report the pet shop, or even call PETA (as much as I disagree with and hate their campaign methods, they are the only group out there who really tries to do anything for animals.)

If it's sick and they can't afford a vet, euthanize the thing. Letting an animal suffer is COMPLETELY IMMORAL no matter if you are a Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Atheist, whatever. Letting any creature suffer (human or animal) just wrong, and all people know that.

Euthanize it, or treat it. Just don't throw it away to suffer to death. There should be severe fines for this sort of thing. It's totally wrong.

Even if it were dead, it's unlawful to dispose of a carcass in the Trash. The health dept. should've been made aware of it. Nothing like having a creature known to carry bacteria festering in a trash can. With a place like that who know how long they'll wait to take the trash out?

I haven't bought an animal from a pet store in over a decade. I go to shelters instead. (My turtles didn't come from a shelter and were not bought by me, they were a gift from someone we used to know).

By the way, a high school teacher I had, once said that anyone who abuses children or animals, should have the body part(s) used to harm that being cut off in very small portions, very slowly, until they are completely gone. I didn't particularly like her, but I couldn't help but agree.

I'm with the fist to the face group on this one. I would have socked the guy, got the turtle and dared them to say anything to me for taking it. What an idiot, and these are the people that average pet buyers depend on for care instructions.

Know what's really sad? The care sheets you find on the internet, typically provide more information than anything a pet store staff member offers you.

It's my feeling that if you are going to dare to sell the animal, you'd better know how to take care of it. That, or hire people who have worked with these animals personally. Cats and dogs need only require basic common sense when it comes to care. However, when you start veering toward turtles, lizards, and snakes, take temperatures, humidity, health issues for the animal, and various other things come into play. So far, out of all the cats and dogs I've encountered, the only health issues I've ever heard of are leg, heart and lung problems. Reptiles are a whole different ball game, and people should know that.
