General Care Discussion :: How to tell if my RES is over weight

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Jun 20, 2010 12:42 am   How to tell if my RES is over weight

How do you tell if your RES is overweight?
I think mine might be a little bit overweigh cause all i have been feeding him is turtle pellets for around 1 and a half.
If he is a little bit overweight how can i get him back to normal?
I do want to make him some of those jello shots so he can eat his veggies which he hates and i also want to vary his diet and go and buy some crickets worms etc.
Any suggestions for food?

If your turtle is overweight, you need to cut down on the fatty foods and the protein. Make sure you are strict about the amount he gets and make sure he is getting veggies.

I've never experienced it personally, but I think the way to tell if your turt is overweight is if he has pudge coming out around his legs and/or head.

the 'tiny pudges' are a sign of an overweight turtle :) I fed mine too much in one day once, and all she did for the next 24hrs was float the the top, and poop, lol...

Shes fine now, however, it was in interesting day, to say the least.

How can i get him to be normal?
I just tried to feed him some romaine lettuce and tomatoes but he did not like them so im gonna give him a break on the pellets for today

A RES is overweight when their pudge lays on the deck when they bask. :(

Needless to say, Sid is on a diet and she hates it.

He doesn't appear pudgy in the picture you posted in the thread about his shell. They do all have skin folds, from what I've seen, and that doesn't necessarily mean fat.

Well the pudge laying on the deck isn't the end all indicator. It's just what Sid's pudge does. :? Sid isn't incredibly overweight, but she could lose a gram or two.

I generally go by the pudge around the back legs. From your photos I think Ranger looks healthy. :)
