Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi all, ive got two different sliders that i need answers about, the first one is a small one, roughly 3inch in size. It has small white growth or something on the outer part of its shell. Id like to know what sex it is as well if possible, ive included pictures of its underside too. The bigger one is 3.5inch roughly, alot wider though.

Here are two pics of it when its dry, and another pic of its underside.

can you have a go at guessing the sex?

Here is the bigger turtle, i havent had it for long, was given to me, i dont know whats up with its shell, i always have uv and regular sun, also cuttlebone is included in its diet.

The water is always clean and he basks all day.

Here are the pics.

Here is it out of the water.

Here is it when wet and in water.

Here is the underside, can you have a go at sexing this?

If you can sex these it would be a great help, also what else can i do to fix the shell situation?

Thanks.

Males have longer front claws and longer tails, so no - we can't really tell from those pictures as we can't see the claws or the tails.

They are probably too young to tell also - usually youy can't tell until they are about 4"

Looks like a fungus. Are any of the areas soft and/or do they smell at all?

The areas arent soft, the shell is pretty hard. Also doesnt smell at all, not even a bit.

Are you able to tell the sex roughly from the underside of the shell?

And anymore information about the white?

Thanks!

Can't really tell sex from the shell, pics of the tail underside would help. The white is a fungus/yeast infection... it doesn't have to smell or feel soft.

How can i fix that? and how did it become that way?

Their tails are always in, dont know how to get a decent photo?

Isnt there a way by telling which way the shell curves at the tail base?

Thanks.

That a look at the tail...

Fungus.. not sure where it comes from, but a lack of basking can encourage it and it is contagious to other RES, so it can spread and grow quickly. Treatment usually requires silver sulfadiazine cream, which needs to be prescribed by a vet.

Thanks for the pictures, so 4 inches is earliest i can sex mine?

Also, without going to a vet will i be able to rid the fungus by taking them outdoors for 10mins or so in real sun?

And they are basking alot more now, water is just right and clean too.

Will that fight it off? Or does it always come back and always stay?

Thanks for the information.

Any more information or ways to get rid of it?

Also anyone want to have an educated guess as to what the sex are/will be?

Thanks!

Treating the fungus depends on what kind it is. Shedding obviously works the best on any fungus, silver sulfadiazine cream works well and very quickly, but not on all fungi.

Yeah, i read one of your old threads stating that the cream didnt do anything to the fungus, when you say shedding works best, does that mean putting them in outside sun for 30mins or so? They bask alot anyway, so there is probably nothing i can do to speed up shedding.

I also noticed that the small ones shell at the tail base is a traingular shape and the bigger one is more curved, does that have anything to do with the sex of the turtles?

The cream is worth a shot because you will know after one or two days if it's working. Good shedding involves diet, basking, UV and patience. The curved shell could just be a retained scute...
