General Care Discussion :: "That time of year again" after 10 years?!?!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun May 08, 2011 10:59 am   "That time of year again" after 10 years?!?!

Trevor is 18 years old, female (I never changed her name after figuring out she was a she at the age of 3 years old when she first laid eggs) and hasn't laid eggs or tried to lay eggs since she was about 8 years old. And she has lived alone her whole life.

Now, all of a sudden, starting yesterday and increasing in intensity today... she is a mad turtle, trying desperately to get out of her tank, and hasn't eaten yesterday or today.

Her behaviour is exactly like it was before... between the ages of 3 years and 8 years old... when she would try to get out because she had eggs to lay. Back then I didn't know any better, so eventually she laid them in the water.

But now, she's bigger, taller, and with her new aquarium that we had built with the attached ramp/basking area...we built it not taking into consideration any escape attempts, as she hadn't done it in 10 years, so now since she's decided she wants out, she stands on her hind legs and CAN get her claws through the mesh screen lid- I am freaking out and don't want to leave her alone. Is she trying to get out to lay eggs??

Should I get a Rubbermaid container and make a nesting box for her and put her in it? Could she be going through the motions of needing to lay eggs without actually having any to lay? Why would she lay eggs for 5 years, then not lay eggs for 10 years, and all of a sudden be wanting to lay eggs again??

Probably eggs, put her in some sand and see what happens.

How big is the tank, she shouldn't be able to reach the lid if she's standing on the bottom.

Tank is 5' long by 2.5' wide by 2.5' high. She's not standing on the bottom, she's standing on the basking area, which is about 10 inches down from top of tank. As I said, when we had the tank built we weren't concerned with her trying to get out as she hadn't exhibited that behavior for 10 years.

I am going to put together a nesting box with sand for her and put her in it, just in case.

Can you take her outside (supervised) the same time she goes crazy everyday. Maybe she wants to pick her own spot.

It does sound like eggs. Is she kept alone? Was she kept alone years earlier?

I had no luck with with rubbermaid. I put her in it and she HATED it..she just wanted out. Mine is laying eggs in the tank and she is acting exactly like yours. Hopefully, you have a secure yard you can let her go in. Mine has only laid eggs one other time in 10 years and both times, it was when I upgraded to a larger tank. Could be coincidence .. You might want to go pick up some eggcrate to cover the top of the tank. Mine got out and took a 5' fall.. she got pretty banged up. She hasn't been able to get out since I bought that amazing stuff! Also pick up a metal file to cut it with. Steve posted a video on another thread about how to cut the eggcrate and you just tap the file on it and it breaks right through

Steve- yes she is alone, always has been. She laid many eggs between the age of 3 years to 8 years, and then NO eggs at all or erratic behavior until now at the age of 18. Is it possible/normal that after a 10 year break from egg laying she's back at it?

I tried the sand/rubbermaid but all she did was dig- no eggs. I can't put her in the backyard as we have a lawn care company so our yard is not animal friendly. Well, they say the chemicals and fertilizers used are pet safe but we've never chanced it with our dog, I wouldn't chance it with Trevor.

Right now we've essentially zip-tied the lid to the tank so she won't be able to escape, and she's calmed a bit but I'm worried about eggs that may be in there.

I think its normal. They live forever!

What did you fill the rubbermaid with and how big is it? It is suppose to be twice as deep as she is long I believe. How long has this been going on? Its been several weeks..maybe even a month for mine is still only laying eggs in the water.

I do not believe many people have had much luck with the rubbermaid. I think it would be ideal to have the nesting area attached to the tank some how..I personally can't figure out how to do that with my tank but I have seen some smaller tanks (50 gallons or so) in the sticky thread that accomplished this successfully.

So she's digging with her hind legs? If some time has passed since the lawn care company did anything, you might want to try it. Having retained eggs is a worse situation. You can always rinse her off too and even uses a diluted disinfectant afterwards.

I am concerned that Spike may start this too. She is 5 now, an hasn't done it yet. If I take her into the yard, will she be able to dig through grass? I could also take her to a freind's house to dig in her organic garden, but the car stresses her a lot. I don't really want to dig holes all over the lawn in hopes that she will find one to her liking. She hasn't shown signs yet, but it could be any day now.

One of my 10 year old females has never laid eggs. The other one who is also 10 has only done it twice. Trust me, you'll know. She will start acting like she is on speed and will frantically try to escape!

Grass will probably be too thick to dig through. Instinctively, she'll want an area where her hatchlings can dig out of.

My female has two "splashing" modes: one is for food and the other is to go outside. I have taken her outside and sometimes she just wants to walk around or "sunbathe." And then there are plenty of times she wants to dig a nest.

The eggs are coming out, 3rd one so far laid this morning. Trevor does not like the various nesting boxes, nor my garden outside, so he's started to pop them out in the water as he has in the past. He's also eating again which is good. Yay!
