General Care Discussion

Hello, I have two baby turtles and two questions. First, is this turtle shell healthy? If you can, can you tell what turtle it is as well? Thanks!

If required, I'll post a picture of him out of water tomorrow.

Turtle looks healthy, but hard to make out the shell pattern. Any more pics? Where did you get them from?

I'll take a few pictures in a bit, trying not to touch them as much since I didn't really know that I wasn't supposed to, lol. My aunt gave me them to me, not sure from where.

I think you may have a baby Yellow bellied Slider or Peninsula Cooter there. Probably you would need to check these two sub species out to narrow it down.. Maybe the Plastrons have different markings..

Interesting read this thread about cooters mostly,, I didn't notice much being said about Yellow bellied Slider Markings.. Maybe this can help you narrow it down..

Yep, it's a YBS then, since mine doesn't have those markings under it. Thanks!

Congrats on your YBS.. We have a lot of fond memories of our YBS (wild Pond turtles) in Florida when we lived there.. Just be aware they get really big so you will need a good sized habitat when they are full grown..

We're planning to get a pretty big tank when we move, since we live in a condo right now. Thanks!

Without seeing the skin patterns, I think this might just be a RES. Those dark spots threw me off... I see them on the marginals on occasion, but usually not on the carapace.

So it could be a RES? Also, to confirm, this shell seems healthy, right? This picture might also help to identify again.

The turtle looks fine. I've seen RES with both patterns, so I think it could still be one.
