General Care Discussion :: New to me ??? O_o

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Nov 08, 2006 8:53 pm   New to me ??? O_o

I've completely changed Leo's tank about 5 times now in the almost 2 months I've had him- but today he did something different! I think he's made this noise once before when he tried to run across the floor off of being on his towel and got dog hair all over his face  but today he did it when I picked him up out of his temporary tank to put him back in his newly cleaned tank- its like he opens his mouth and makes this noise like he's struggling! Kind of like a human would make if they were struggling- is that normal? I would assume it was just how he sounded when he's struggling to get out of my hands but he's never acted or sounded like that before in this situation! ????

OoOo no- the dog hair thing happened a few weeks ago! and I carefully got all of that off of his face before I put him back in his water! It was just those few seconds he was out of the water in my hands he was making that noise! Other than that no weird noises or behavior!

Zeke makes a 'sound' when he is upset too. Usually when he is ready to go back in his tank or doesn't like what I am doing to him.

Leo hisses and snaps when I pick him up, I don't think all turtles enjoy interaction, Leo pretty much keeps me around because i supply his pellets :-)

it could have been a hiss..
most times, they are not actually hissing at you, but retracting the air into their lungs so they can fit into their shells because they are scared.. or something similar to that.. dont know EXACTLY what goes on, but i know its because theyre scared and want to get into their shell

Yeah, it's not like a cat's hiss, but i don't think it's meant in a sweeter gesture either :-)
All in all, most sounds my turtle makes (that i've heard at least) are sounds of not being happy.

Okay-phew- so I can take that as the first time he was upset with me since he got dog hair all over his face! :x I was really worried something was wrong but now that you guys are saying it could have been a hiss- it definately sounded like a mad hiss! (just not as defiant as a cats)

bri- I had never dropped him but he could have definately been mad because I had picked him up to put him in his other tank!

Sounds like a hiss to me! A long time ago, I found that Sheba was the ultimate "bathroom cleaner". I would turn her loose on the bathroom floor (with the door closed), wait about 1/2 hour, go get her, and she had all the dust & hair from the floor in her claws & on her belly! Wipe off, then repeat! Great fun for them, helpful for you. LOL! :D

Awww that sounds so cute!! haha I'm sure Leo would love to run around the bathroom floor (not so sure about the dust and hair part though- he was pretty mad that day he had dog hair all over his face and i'm sure there's some of that in the bathroom- Boomer is EVERYWHERE around here!) lol But he would love that freedom because I always have to grab him when he gets going on his towel so he doesn't experience another face full of dog hair! ;)

i'm not sure- I've never let Leo out for too long because they say as hatchlings environment change could be a shock to them and not so good! I'm waiting til he's bigger and older until I let him out for periods of time! Someone else with more experience will have to answer that for ya! :)

turtles are more of a "look but dont touch" kinda pet. most turtles do not like to be handled or removed from their environment. my guess is if hes snapping at your bf, you should leave him in his tank
