General Care Discussion :: Neck bulge

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu Dec 07, 2006 2:23 pm   Neck bulge

I just noticed yesterday Sheba has this bulge/bubble-like thing sticking out from the side of her face. Below the red, just in front of neck fold. Wondering if anyone has encountered before. I have a couple of good pics and will post as soon as I figure out how.

without the pictures my guess would be an ear abcess.. if that's what it is, you'll need to take your turtle to the Vet. We'll be able to know better once the pictures are posted. :)

I read the instructions on the pics and afraid I don't quite get it. I plan on taking her in, bit of a family thing going on here, daughter being induced today.

Most definetly an ear abcess. It'll have to be lanced by a vet. Call today and make an appointment to get her in sometime in the next few days. It looks as though she's had it for a while for it to be that large. I do know that they are said to be painful so don't let her wait too long.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes

You might also want them to take a look at that spot on her shell if you haven't addressed that already.

Will do. A couple days ago I was watching her eat and she seemed to be slower, can't believe I didn't notice it.

after seeing the pictures, I totally agree with Jen. Definitely an ear abcess and I'd also have him check out that spot on the shell. You may want to bump up the water temp to like 80-82 until you can get to a vet.

Just an update: Took Sheba in, they did lance it and are going to give her a few vitamin shots over the next couple weeks. Said that was probably the issue with her shell. There were a couple other areas on her shell that were peeling. As I'm relatively new at this, I forgot about the UV bulb longevity issue. Thought it was still working because it still lit up. Got new bulb also.
