Nope a YBS has a thick vertical stripe on the sides of their heads. I'm not sure what that turtle is, it's hard to tell from the photo without seeing it's shell etc.

The head looks like a RES, except the ears are yellow...which it still can be a RES...The shell has always looked "dull" and "dry" almost "wooden" looking. :?

Didn't the people there tell you what kind of turtle it was? Maybe you should get that shell checked out... it just doesn't look normal to me.. :?

It looks like a RES to me. A RES that probably had (or has?) metabolic bone disease.

Do you know anything about the turtle's history? What kind of environment is the turtle in now? What is the turtle's diet?

The turtle was labeled RES in the store, but I've always had doubts...It's not afraid of people...It doesn't "dive off" when people comes near. It floats more than it swims. The health appears normal, he eats Repto pellets and Repto dry shrimp treats, and recently I added in some raw carrots. I feed him every other day. It just floats around, looks around throughout the day...as oppose to swimming and "exploring..sniffing around the tank" like other turtles do. The rest of the time he basks and checks out his surroundings by turning his head...

The turtle is now in a 20 gallon long tank with 100watt basking lamp and a zoo med ramp. There is Tetra underwater heater that's designed for turtles with a Fulval 2 canister water filter.

I agree with marisa, looks like she had (or maybe still has) MBD. The beak looks out of alignment also. Lay off the shrimp and feed pellets every other day. Offer greens (romaine, redleaf) and as much cuttlebone as she wants. Do you have a UVB light? Maybe a trip to the vet for some supplements may help......also the "floating around", can she dive to the bottom? If not that could be a problem.
