General Care Discussion :: sleep

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

This may seem like an odd question but here it goes:

How do turtles sleep? Do they sleep underwater? How long do they sleep for.

I saw Myrtle at the bottom of the tank not moving but when I tapped on the glass she woke up and was back to normal?!

Should I be worried or was she just sleeping?

They sleep underwater, mine does it a lot but sometimes i still get freaked out. One time he was on the bottom of his tank with his head and the arm and leg on side tucked in, and the other two legs were hanging out and he looked totally dead. I kept telling myself, he's just sleeping weird, don't worry, no need to wake him, but after a few minutes i couldnt help myself and gave him a little nudge. He woke up and looked so mad at me. I felt bad. So it's nothing to worry about, she's sleeping normally.

They can pretty much sleep anywhere. Some of my turtles prefer the basking area, especially when the weather gets warmer. Some sleep in the water. What your turtle was doing sounds normal.

George sometimes sleeps between the filter and the heater (right by the surface) but also sometimes sleeps right in the middle of his tank at the bottom. They can sleep pretty much anywhere.

Sleeping underwater is totally normal. :) How long they sleep is up to the individual turtle. Mine sometimes naps a bit when she is basking, and sleeps maybe 7 hours at night (from what I can guess, anyway).

my male YBS and my female Map both sleep under water verry close together.
squirt is scared to sleep alone so she pursuaded Rocky to sleep with her.
if squirt gets scared, Rocky goes to the surface to check things out whilst squirt stays terrified at the bottom.
they allways sleep together close to the heater and filter.
i made an underwater cave by ulturing my rocks just incase squirt gets scared.
maby she will sleep in the cave for now on.
its totally normal for turtles to sleep under water.
my turtles are so cute.....aaaaaaaaaaw turtle love!

One of my turts like to sleep half submerged and half on the basking area. The other one likes to sleep the same way but near the heater and tha last one just likes to sleep submerged near the plants.

Mine always sleep, one next to the other, in a corner, on the rock, as if they are looking at me. :D They are soo protective

usually underwater, though sometimes mine will climb up on the plant and go to sleep with just their little noses poking through the surface :)

Mine always sleep on the basking rock next to each other generally with one of them resting their head on the other one.

Chong sleeps by the log at the bottom. Cheech, he's a party animal and I've only seen him sleeping once... He's always awake when I check. I think he has insomnia.
