On the hottest day, the temp gets to 83 deg. The turts actually
like the sun, its great when they bask.

Also, Im not sure what Im gonna do about preventing another
escape. Im not to fond of the screen idea because of accessibility,
and I don't like the idea of blocking the uvb's or the sunlight. But,
I do need to do something so it might come down to one or the other.
Right now I have the water level less than 3/4 the tank.
Thanks for the ideas.

I had some left over pieces of those wire snap together shelves, so I just taped them on top of the tank. The gaps are like 2'' x 2'' so it works great. This is kinda what I'm talking about, on they are made of wire:

They're only like eight bucks at target, I think.

It's a miracle that the baby don't have any injuries, and besides all the suggestions before, i will add this, you may take little bit of water off from the tank, and get the basking area lower, they are baby turtles and will be ok with few less water, and YES, if you put the tank at the center of the self instead of the side you can make a nice set up for your pics and turtles ;)
GlaD TO Be A MeMBeR, :) I have a 2 yo male turtle and a baby turtle 2-3 months old, I'm interested in knowing more about them,
hugs, Albert, Donatello and Baby turtle and bunch of tropical fishes( 3 acuariums) :)

Yup, we have seen this happen before!

Yeah thats exactly what i did, I can deal with a little extra
splashing noise from the filter, plus the water doesn't touch
the lights. Thanks. ------- Smurf, GREAT idea, appreciate it.

I couldn't help but notice this as I was browsing the thread, and I'm curious as to whether maybe you're confused, but why did you tack on "California State University" to UC Davis? CSU and UC (University of California) schools are two completely separate educational systems in California. To my knowledge, there isn't an equivalent CSU around Davis that has a veterinary program, but UC Davis does have a School of Veterinary Medicine.

Sorry if this is completely unrelated to the topic, but I can add in my two cents to contribute: my turtle escaped once years ago, and there was a very minor shell break, more like bruising. I had no idea what to do, so I left it alone. Thankfully, my turtle is still alive, completely healthy and of course I now know better. She's a fighter! :)
