David pretty much hit the nail on the head with that explanation.

I have the bars in my hand, the ball at the end of the clamp won't fit into the hole and I have no idea how to lossen that to slide it into the hole, I tried just placing it between the bars and attaching it to the light, but it wouldn't adjust, and my turtles are going to bite me lol

maybe you got the nut too tight? is the ball in two holes in the curved bars?

no the actual part that clamps to the 2 curved bars. I can see by the picture I need to get that ball off and slide it through the holes but I can't loosen it

the ball stays on the clamp part its attached to. you just slide it into the part that holds the dome

The ball part doesn't go into the holes, it goes between the holes, then you spread the other end of the curved bars open to go around the base of the lamp and then tighten it down.

Alright I am going to try with pics!!!

Here is what I am going to call everything...
Image

First you take the Metal bracket, and loosen the Wing nut, and bolt, like so...
Image

Then you hold the Little opened end, over the Ball joint, BUR DON"T TIGHTEN THE WING NUT, AND BOLT YET!!...
Image

While holding the Little opened end, over the Ball joint, slide the Big opened end over the Base of the lamp, and TIGHTEN THE WING NUT, AND BOLT...
