General Care Discussion :: Everyone- General Survey- Where does your turtle sleep?

Fred sleeps on his underwater resting dock As soon as the light goes out, he gets on it, and pull his head in, and he is gone! I wish my kids had been that easy to put to bed! During the day, he naps on it, in the plants, and on the ramp to his basking platform. I have only seen him sleep on the front of the dock...never toward the back...always thought that was kind of weird. Here is a pic showing the underwater dock.

Bob and Tom both sleep in the water Bom is the wirdest sleeper because she grabs ahold of the bush in her tank with her back legs and pulls in her head and she streshes out her front legs as far as she can lol Tom just sleeps wile grabing her bush with her back legs also but she pulls both her head and her legs

Scoop sleeps on the corner away from the filter and Sneaky sleeps close the water heater but not touching it.

Wow Evlock- beautiful tank!

Seems like most like to sleep in water.

But a few like it dry- interestingly in warmer climates it seems.

Maybe the one that sleeps on the front of the dock thinks he's going to make a quicker getaway!

Thanks for all of your responses. We will be examining this data collection Monday and graphing it Tuesday if anyone else can add to this it would be great, especially if you have a turtle that sleeps out of the water. If it sleeps out of the water please include climatic information for where you live- this will enable The class to discuss the term correlation, and possibly lend itself to a line graph.

My turtle sleeps vertically, standing up, stretching his head above water every now and then!
Is that normal??

Tiny sleeps verticle too, sticking her head up and down all night long.

Raff, has 3 distinct locations depending on the Temp. Either tangled up in his plant in the middle of the Tank, vertically wedged between his end of his dock and side of the tank with his head just beneath the water, or on those cold nights he hugs his heater.

Mittens (my bigger turtle, on the bottom in the picture below) sleeps on the section of the ramp to her dock that dips in the water most of the time, she keeps her head underwater until she has to take a breath and then extends her neck out above the surface. Bootsy sleeps near the surface in between the cord to the heater and the filter, supporting himself with his claws. Sometimes he sleeps next to Mittens, it's almost like they cuddle. It's adorable. They also nap under the basking light. They both woke up moments before I snapped this photo:

Rolo almost alwasy starts off her nights under her dock in the darkest corner of the tank all "curled" up. Then she'll either stay there or go under her loggy. this morning though I found her on her loggy parially streched out with her head hanging off the log. lol She's usually asleep before me and stays asleep untill the fish feeding frenzy wakes her up. She takes periodic naps in the same spot she falls asleep. she's so adorable when she sleeps

Sam sleeps at the bottom of his ramp with his back legs hanging off.....He stays under for hours at a time when he is sleeping......He'll float up to the surface and grab a breath, and then freefalls back to his resting spot....

Mr. Turtle sleep in about any given position. Today I caught him up in some rafters we put in the tank to separate our baby fish from the turtles. I found it rather amusing. Here are a few pictures:

Now that I got a new (much bigger) tank, one sleeps in the soap dish I put in about two inches under the surface and the other sleeps attached to the romaine. Before I got the soap dishes, one slept wedged in between a wire and the glass.

This probably is too late for the charts, but Donna sleeps hugged up to the top of the heater with her back feet resting on the top of my homemade heater guard. Her head is extended and her nose is just barely beneath the water. She also refuses to sleep unless it is pitch black.

It's really been interesting reading all of your replies.

The kids did the chart last week and were excited to discuss how only 2 turtles really slept out of the water, but a few caught the detail that they were North Eastern painted, not RES- so we had great discussion and all learned alot about data collection and making inferences and conclusions.

Even though the lesson has passed, I still have students visiting this forum nightly by own choice, they are very interested in how the data continues to grow, and honestly your pictures and stories are quite enetertaining, especially the "great climber" in most recent photos, so I believe we have some future turtle owners.

I have really enjoyed this discussion thread and do hope people continue to add to it, even though the initial lesson has passed. I chose to post this as a discussion instead of a survey poll because I wanted to be able to read the personal accounts of each sleeping situation. We are enjoying the little stories. Some of the kids have been asking if we can submit a new class question, so maybe next week we'll have something about food preferences. They are also very interested in where everyone got their turtles. Obviously looking to get one- with parental permission and support of course
