sm02 - My own personal opinion is that I too do not think it's right to catch and eat an animal that is endangered or threatened in an area. It's just not necessary.

I am going to skip the other part of the debate although I will just note that I am vegan and it is a personal choice which I do not impose on anyone else.

Too funny - I am meat eater myself - beef esp.! But that has happened since I came to Texas - I guess I have gone native! I lived with a chinese family for a while and they would steam blue crab. I took the chopsticks one day and started playing with them. They were actually pretty fun and seemed to be learning. I couldnt eat them. After that I learned not to have personal relationships with the animals I eat. I prefer them to be anonymous!

On the eating the endangered species issue - I totally agree with sm02. If they are endangered it is exactly because they have been over-hunted or have lost their natural environments. Protected species are generally designated so in legislation, so it could be already illegal in your state to take them from the wild and kill them for any reason. You may not need a petition to do something about it. Just report the activity to the police or wildlife protection agency. Check your states wildife and fisheries department; they generally list rules and regs regarding native species.

I'm totally cool with other people eating turtles. As long as they aren't endangered, then I see no problems with it.

I don't have a problem with people eating turtles, as long as they aren't endangered. I think people eating turtles like RES helps to minimize some of the overpopulation. Could you imagine how much worse the turtle population would be if people weren't eating them?

I don't agree with eating endangered species because it is against the law and it isn't a necessary item in the human diet. I feel the same way about eating humans which is why I don't believe telling 'meat eaters' (we're actually omnivores) to human meat is a good argument, because it's illegal. You can't use the argument that it's wrong to eat a snapper because it's against the law then turn around ask 'meat eaters' to break the law by eating people. Besides it's all about personal preference. Humans don't have to eat other humans in order to be classified as a true 'meat eater'. But again, we aren't meat eaters, we're omnivores. I don't think it's possible for a human to eat strictly animal based products and not die.

I eat meat, mainly chicken. I don't like fish or most beef, but I still eat meat. I don't happen to like certain foods like turtle, puppies, kitten, baby cows, fawns, bears, whales, sharks, or snakes but I'm not about to tell others they can't/shouldn't eat them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion (as long as they aren't breaking the law) that includes the vegans, vegetarians, and the rest of the world.

And if you're gonna pick and choose about work computers and the difference between a vegan and vegetarian then maybe you should look up the difference between a carnivorous cannibal and an omnivore.

You don't have to be a vegan for what I wrote to apply. You said "meat eaters" are "sickos" and the reasons you gave was cruelty.

If you abhor cruelty to animals then maybe you should check your own lifestyle before you call others "sickos"

I stand by what I wrote. Go do whatever you want in your own back yard but keep your judgmental opinions about mine to yourself. I don't mind vegans like littlecakes and others who said they are tolerant, but there's no need to call people sickos for doing what nature intended.

You say sicko, and I say hypocrit. Maybe if you hadn't attacked me I wouldn't have fired back, hmmn?

I wonder how you justify the animal protein you feed to your RES?

I am pretty adventurous eater and will try almost anything (almost!). I dont remember if I have had turtle soup to be honest. If it has been served to me I am sure I have eaten it. But now that I won a turtle - no way. Not my bag either. I couldnt separate the image of my pet from the food! I would be a bit disturbed.

Boy, you sure do know how to take things out of context! I searched the word "sicko" and the only thing I can find that was said was this:

You think it's perfectly normal to eat an endangered animal? I'm sorry, but then you are a sicko. Eating an endangered animal is horribly sickening.

I am a meat-eater (though only beef, chicken, and occasionally pork) and I don't understand why other meat-eaters are getting their panties all in a bunch over this thread. sm02 was merely expressing his disgust over people eating a type of turtle that is threatened/endangered (it is endangered in IL where I live).

I personally would love to be a vegetarian, but I don't have the willpower and I am far too picky of an eater. My brother is a vegetarian and has been since he was 3 or 4 years old (he is now 18) and I admire him for that.

Personally, I couldn't even THINK of eating a turtle, simply because I have one as a pet. If I had a pet cow I wouldn't want to eat cows either. I guess it's a good thing I don't live on a farm. But if people want to eat "different" kinds of meat, fine by me, I just don't want to see it. And again, I think it is completely wrong to eat threatened/endangered species.
