It is too soon to really tell - - I had a very good hunch that my other turtle Squirt was a boy because his front nails have always been long and his tail has always been on the short side

Now i dont know if Painted-s are the same but it has a much longer tail already then either of my RES have ever had (this may be breed specific though) so who knows - - IDk about the tail thing - - i read that males have thicker tails but you def. cant tell that as a baby

i wouldn't let it happen or even try - - but can Painteds and RES breed successfully?

It's can happen, it's just not as likely as two RES or two Easterns.

Is the other turtle the RES that is being treated right now? If so, you need to keep them separate. Infections can be highly contagious. If they are separate, try to make sure that things you might use for both them are kept separate (towels, a filled feeding container, etc) and your hands are washed after handling the RES.

yeah they are in separate tanks - - I have two RES and a Painted now
Squirt the oldest (who is sick) is in a tank by himself and my painted is in with my baby RES chomper (they are the same size) and get along pretty well but i am keeping an eye out for aggression. They just generally tend to do their own thing. I am very careful about always using hand sanitizer or washing my hands after i do anything involving either tank - - i have a thing with "germs"

each one of my turtles has their own food,towels,etc. etc.
