And as long as the towel/blanket is large enough, you don't have to worry about any drooping. I had to do this right after I got my large tank because the delivery guys forgot to bring the hoods. Just make sure the towel/blanket is large enough to drape down the front and back and you won't have any problems with drooping. Also, it won't get wet just sitting on top of the tank. The evaporation/humidity is not high enough to make the towel feel damp.

My boy has had one of those beach towels over his tank nightly since we got him almost a year ago. Partly because any light wakes him up and he stays awake all night and also to keep the air warm. The underside gets a few drops of water on it sometimes but never damp enough to notice. Even in the winter when it gets cold if his towel is on he sometimes will stay basking even with the light off. Once he got used to it he really liked it.
