To get rid of calcium and magnesium in the water you pretty much need a reverse osmosis filter. And I wouldn't even want to think what the costs would be in an RO for an outside pond in Arizona would be. You're losing so much to evaporation that it would require a pretty big system and frequent filter changes.
I wish I had a better answer.
All of that is not to say that there will still be benefits in using the inline carbon filter. It's just that it won't help the problem you are trying to address.
