Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Which brings on another train of thought. Perhaps there are grade schools, partiuclarly Kindergarten classes that could use a RES for the kids to learn about responsibility and care taking. Pending the teacher takes care of it, and it gets an adiquate environment.

WOWZA! In a case like this, if I was closer, I could be persuaded to take one of them off your hands. Not more than one though because I would want to be able to provide for the little guy properly.

There may be a few folks on this board who would love to take a couple of healthy hatchlings off your hands. And I agree with Spotsmama too about the possibility of some schools or universities taking some of the kids off your hands. The Biology depts. usually have a few animals in the classrooms for study, and the students help clean & care for the animals.

Reptomin foodsticks are very nutritious. I have found this to be my fav turtle food for my turtles. She has been marvelously healthy on this stuff the last 16 yrs! And don't worry about the size of the sticks, they do soften in the water so the hatchlings can nip at them.

I admire your caring for these hatchlings....it's not something that a lot of people would have done.

I'm going to google the local PA papers regarding a man taken over by 150 hatchlings. Wait, I'll just email him :)

Thanks for your interest in the continuing saga of the RES rescue. Thanks to your forum, my school district and some of my kindhearted friends I am in the process of distributing the turtles to a variety of homes and facilities where they will be well cared for and either released when appropriate or kept as pets. My last posting (Sunday) on the forum indicated I had rescued 153 turtles. Well... on Monday morning I went back to the river and found 43 more that I had missed because of the fact that the water became extremely cloudy when I stirred up the sediment on Sunday walking in the river while rescuing them. AMAZINGLY only 1 of the 196 RES has died to this point. All the rest appear very healthy.

Thanks for ALL of your concern, tips, and suggestions!
I hope you ALL have a GREAT Holiday Season!

totally AMAZING! George, I hope you are very proud of your good deed. And at Christmas, too!

How could 196 turtles be dumped?! I mean, how many "litters" is that?? Anyone know? I would think it wouldn't be terribly hard to find the culprit--look for someone with lots of turtles, right? am I wrong?

What a story! Are there any bait shops/small pet shops, etc. that could have dumped them, or perhaps someone brought them up from another (southern?) state hoping to make some money selling them as Christmas presents?

Hope they all find good homes. :)

bring this to the media's attention. do it. it's the only good that will come out of this terrible situation. Animal cruelty isn't taken lightly these days and in fact local ASPCA might even launch a criminal investigation. It happens all the time down here in Houston. We don't take cruelty to animals lightly at all, since a lot of us, especially in the NW suburbs own some land out in the boonies with some horses/cattle for the tax exemption. My friend Joey and I went out to his land to put up some fence and we saw their neighbors animals were starving so we fed them thru the fence while calling the ASPCA and they had real "animal cops" there in like 30 minutes and took the guys animals. Turns out he went to jail for it. SO yeah. Get some exposure, it works.
From the homegrowers soul, straight to his lungs. That's the method that I myself find fun. Start from seed and then you'll see, just how fun homegrowing can be.

George, I am enormously relieved that your community is chiping in with helping hands. Red eared sliders are beautiful, amazing creatures. The world would have been a poorer place without them, if you hadn't felt the compulsion to help.

Have a wonderful holiday!

RES Rescue update...

A BIG THANKS to mybrosteve (a RES forum member) for adopting 15 of the rescued hatchlings today. To date I have been able to find placements for 87 of the 196 rescued. In the New Year I will be taking more into the schools in my district and setting up an adoption program for kids (parents) who understand the needs of raising a RES.

I again wish to thank everyone for their interest and support.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
