On cleaning bio media, if you want to absolutely minimize the loss of bacteria, gently rinse the items in tank water. And what you can put in your tank to jumpstart the bio filter is a powder called Biotize. You can put it directly in the filter or sprinkle it in the water. Neater to put it in the filter.
