Someone suggested pulling the turtle underwater if he/she's got ahold of you and won't let go. They'll have to let go to get a breath of air.

Ouch! :o I always wondered how much damage a full grown RES could do if given the chance. I've seen a snapping turtle chomp right through a 1 inch thick stick before! Definitely would not want to get near that mouth!

Mine bit me once, and like the others, I had a v-shaped chunk o' hurt. I stopped all movement, sucked in my breath and she let go. Man, it hurt. Once she was back in teh water, I tried to work it out: "I don't understand you sometimes," I said to her. "The nicer I am, the meaner you are. You just don't appreciate anything I do for you! I always told myself I would never be in this kind of relationship, and yet here I AM! So that's it? that's it? you have nothing to say for yourself? FINE!" Then I fled the room. But we made up later when I brought her some shredded carrots and she let me pet her chin.

Good link.
I should carefull when moving my RES. But when RES grow up, their diet is almost vegetable, they do not eat meat,... anymore. So why they bite us ? just for defending, kidding ?

Don't count on your RES outgrowing the biting instinct. When they are grown they may not be as likely to bite, but when they do, you'd better watch out because the big ones have a bite like a steel trap.
