General Care Discussion :: john's not eating

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu Mar 22, 2007 5:38 pm

You might want to take both though, unless you plan on separating them. Turtles like humans, get other turtles sick when they are ill. Its only common sense, whatever you're turtle(s) have, should go away if treated agressively. Remember we are all rooting for you, john and ayern! Good luck!

And about you're boyfriend, i can relate to that. I have had people give me kind of strange looks, just because i dedicate so much time to my turtles. Not everyone loves them as much as we do.

Yea I would definitely take him to the vet if he's sluggish. As far as your boyfriend, try not to get too upset. A lot of people can't relate to animals like we do. I'm sure it's not an expression of his feelings for you, he just doesn't understand how you feel.

Shed a few tears and if he's got any heart whatsoever, he'll cave in. Um, I hope I didn't piss anyone off with that comment. I just know my heart melts when my wife pouts or cries...which she doesn't do much lately, she'd just rather fight, which doesn't get us anywhere...I think I'll just shut up now!

I hope John gets better soon. :?

oh i'm crying right now, i'm sure i'll still be when he gets here. it just makes me so sad.

i still have the storage container from when i first got them, but i don't have the money for a new water heater. is it okay if i just put him in that, take it outside (the weather's a toasty 76, no drafts) and then leave him out of the tank overnight until i can get him to the vet? the appointment's at 11am. i still have that stupid container that i bought them in, i can rinse it out.

should i do a complete water change, too? just to be on the safe side? i called my old boss, left a message to have her call me back. she's had turtles before, i was going to ask her if she could take care of aeryn while i'm nursing john back to health.

he's hanging out on one of my boyfriend's books right now. obviously annoyed, though not moving to do anything about it. he covered his face instead of retracting into his shell, i don't know if that means anything.

here's a few pictures, i don't notice any swelling but his left eye does seem a little gunky to me, that's where he's been rubbing. he's got it closed right now, won't open it.

i'll tell y'all tomorrow what the vet said.

is this good advice?

http://reslider.free.fr/backup/sickness.html
---If your turtle keeps her eyes closed, they are swollen, and eventually she refuses to eat.. Suspect an eye infection. These infections are caused by dirty water or lack of vitamin A. Change the water more often. Raise the temperature to 80 to 85 degrees Farenheit. Keep the basking light on. You can clean her eyes with a solution of distiled water and 3% boric acid or a solution of distiled water and salt or the old standard sulfamethiazine. Do this morning and night. You might want to use cotton or a q-tip to apply the solution. Try to open the lids so that the solution goes inside the eye. Give your turtle a Reptile vitamin supplement on a regular basis. You can find those supplements in most pet shops. If you see no improvement on the condition of the turtle within 5 days, take her immediately to a veterinarian.

i have him in a small marinating bowl with that green kitchen rubbery stuff from his basking spot and a cloth to keep him warm. http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8312

he's sleeping right now. i sprayed some warm water with a little bit of salt on him, he jumped a bit but didn't wake up.

what would you recommend for vitamins? -zoo med's turtle drops http://www.zoomed.com/html/eye_drops.php

they are isolated. should i try feeding him again in the morning, in a separate container and do a full water change on aeryn's tank?

sorry to ask so many questions, i just want to make sure i'm not exacerbating it.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that John's that sick. It's a good thing that you're taking him to the vet tomorrow. He is such a little guy, I hope the vet makes him feel better. Try not to fret too much and just make him as comfortable as possible. He needs warmth and rest so his immune system can help him fight this. Hang in there!

went to the vet, the total bill was $69.

i told him everything, and even brought the food so he knows what the turts have been eating. he says i'm taking good care of them and not to feel bad, these things can just happen. john got a shot of baytril, and the dr. gave me four more syringes so i could administer the rest of the treatment. john's already a little more active.

he also said a full water change on the big tank will be a very good idea, and keep an eye on aeryn in case she shows any signs. there's still two fish in the tank (unless aeryn ate one while i was at the vet) so this is going to be fun.

i'm so glad i caught this sooner rather than later. aeryn's still doing good.
