My turtles LOVE to dig and rearrange their tank. This tends to be common for turtles in tanks -if you have an undergravel filter I'm going to say that it is not going to provide the kind of filtration you are going to need especially if the container is 50 gal. You can find it in the articles on the site but your going to need a filter that is rated 3x higher then the capacity of your tank because turtles create a lot more waste then a normal fish. Most commonly sugested are external canister filters ( I have a fluval ). But no gravel whatsoever is going to be best for your turtles health because I can guarentee they will move and dig up the river rocks/ gravel

Undergravel filters don't need gravel to filter. You can just put down river rock. But undergravel filters are next to useless when it comes to turtle filtration. You'll have to change the water as often as you would if you had no filter at all.

We have two red ears sliders in an indoor tank and just changed the tank around a little bit and as soon as we put them back in the tank they have been messing with the filter (submersible fluval) we have tried putting heavy rocks in front of it and they are still messing with it. Does anybody have any suggestions on what we could do to get them to stop messing with the filter?
