General Care Discussion :: turtle abuse - serious issue!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

that's aweful what he did to your turtles! I'm glad to hear you are getting them back! poor babies! I don't understand how anybody can do that to something so tiny and helpless and cute. If he can do it to a turtle, he can do it to a human. I'm worried about any of the children living with him. Is there any way you can turn him into child protective services and get the children out of his house, even if they have to be seperated, it would be better then being in a house with that monster!

Yeah, I should be getting them back later on this week. I went out and got my step-sister a small gift to say thank you. Let's see how many pieces I can put back together after all this BS.

None of his kids live with him, they are all with their mother who has full custody over them, or out in college. He doesn't really see them that often anyways, they kind of keep their distance from him. Jas, Chris, and Mark Jr. are all above eighteen, the only one underage is Ty (I miss that kid so much right now, it was a big deal when he could come over to the apartment and use my xbox, cause he had to sell his a long time ago).

I'm sorry but that is really F-ed up! He should have had some punishment in regards to ANY abuse to the turtles.... 5 seconds or 15 seconds it doesn't matter! The fact that he put his emotions before the well being and LIFE of an animal is inexcusable and a report should be made. Even if nothing happens now... the reports will eventually begin to add up and once that time happens people will finally pay for it.

I'm not going to make a report. I'm just done and over with him. I'm sure, knowing me, making a report might mean I have to have face to face contact with him, and if I do, I'll probably hit him out of pure anger. As much as I'd enjoy that, it's petty to me and lacks class.

In any rate, Jas is bringing them to me tomorrow, my little girls get to come home.

I cleaned up their tank real good. Some potting soil spilled it in, so I had to bleach it down a little bit, then spent about thirty minutes rinsing it out in my shower. (I disinfect my bath tub after each tank cleaning, BTW). I'm going to keep them in shallow water for a short while, see how they behave, and if I think they will be okay health wise, and stress wise, then I'll get them the new stuff I want to get them, and put them back in deep water. Jas said they looked pretty good, so, we'll see.

We are meeting her in a little while. I'll give updates tomorrow. I've gotta clean their shells and keep a close eye on them.

(I've tried raising them a certain way so that my presence doesn't stress them out after a tank cleaning, or set up change, and they've seen me so much over the last year (I'm literally in their faces all the time) I know they'll be glad to see me.

Off to see my little girls, wish me luck!

Okay, I just brought them home.

Aside from being a little pale (lack of nutrients, obviously, back on their regular diet now), their skin is fine, their eyes are fine, their shells are fine. They were pale like this when I first got them a year ago, and if I can fix it with a correct diet once, I can do it again.

They looked totally angry when she picked them up in their carrier, and the second they saw me, they went berserk! HUMAN WHO FEEDS US!!! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?????

They are eating, basking, and swimming normally. On my next payday, I'm buying their new stuff, so they can be back in deep water. I'm getting a new ramp, UV bulb (the one I had broke by accident in the move to my new apartment), and some new, better food.

I scrubbed their shells good when they got home before I dared put them in the clean, fresh tank. Their shells were very, very dirty. Hurricane hated it, Typhoon didn't seem to mind. Typhoon is sorta prissy, and likes things very neat and sparkly clean.

Oh, and, they are shedding again. They grew in the last month too, I think Typhoon finally hit two inches, and Hurricane is almost at two inches. They always go through physical changes each time they get something new.

Way I figure, after being in a microwave, tossed around, taken care of by complete strangers, and living with two unknown turtles for a month, if they were going to get sick, they would have by now. Being with my sister's turtles like that got on my nerves. I didn't dare mention it, but, what if my turtles gave her turtles something, or the opposite? I'm glad that hasn't happened.

Well I am glad they got out of that bad environment... I hope they settle in nicely!

Lol, yeah!

They are kind of unhappy with the current set up. They want their basking log, and their deep water, and unfortunately, I lost the basking log in the move (sometimes things happen for a reason, cause I hated that thing) so, right now, they have no ramp. I consider the ramp to be more important than deep water. Without a ramp or good resting spots.

I'm going to assume the following, true or not:

1. Could not bask or dry off properly.
2. Were not fed, or fed very little.
3. Calcium/Vitamin D3 deficiency.
4. Probably brought home some sicknesses from the turtles they were living with.
5. Might not have been handled much, so I have to work on re-socializing them. They aren't as excited to see me as they were before they were taken.

Edit: BTW, their shells actually darkened a little bit. Being under the infared bulb seems to do their skin and shells a lot of good. Still gonna have them on their proper diet of course.
