Yes, if it gets cool around where you live, then you will need a water heater.

Another reason for getting a water heater is to try to maintain a consistent water temperature so that you don't get the big drops in temp at night. Get a good heater with a temp control knob so you can set it to where you want to maintain the minimum temp (low to mid 70's for adults, upper 70's for babies). The heater will only come on when it needs to to keep the temp from dropping below the set temp. A popular heater for turtle tanks is the Visitherm Stealth heater. It is encased in a strong black plastic housing so the turtle can't break it.

If you're talking about a "compact" fluorescent, then it will fit into most standard lamps. There is a ceramic base on the bulb that is larger than most normal bulbs, so it won't fit into every lamp.

The plastic based lamps are rated for up to 60 or 75 watts I believe (there should be a sticker on it that says). The compact flourescent UV bulbs are only like 23 watts so it should be safe as long as it will fit, like Steve mentioned.

So the plastic part in my light where you screw the bulb in won't melt?

Compact flourescent UVB lights don't produce enough heat to cause the plastic to melt. I've used them in plastic sockets.

Lol, thats pretty much all I could find. Most of the pics online are of the bulb out of its box. Don't they all look pretty much the same?

Becareful with the reptisuns as they can cause eye damage (it happened to my turtles). If I was you i'd look into another UVB bulb just to be safe, I'm currently using a Reptiglo 5.0 and it's working great.

If you do decide to get the reptisun 5.0 be sure to position it 12 inches away from your turtle. And to position it directly over him, not at an angle, and use a normal fixture, nothing shiny or reflective. Most of the eye problems happened with the reptisuns 10.0 but there have been some with the 5.0's too..stay away from the 10.0's.
