Hi There

My RES has Respiratory Infection please could you advise me on what to do.

I can't go to the Vet until the 24.07.2007 due to the vets been closed.

His current temp is 24c and his water is very clean with lots of aeration
and his UVB basking light is kept on as usual.

You can bump the temp up to around 27c. Keep his water level on the shallow side so he doesn't have to swim too much (this uses up energy). Avoid stress (don't pick him up unless you have to), keep his water very clean, try to see that he eats (you can offer him tempting treats like shrimp and earthworms and tuna that you'd normally only offer occasionally to make sure he gets his calories). If he won't eat or seems to be going downhill you can soak him in a 50%/50% mixture of Pedialyte and water twice a day. Pedialyte is sold at places like Walgreen's and is a drink for sick children.

How do you know your turtle has RI?

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

His wheezing and a few small bubbles from his mouth when under water.

The bubbles from his mouth when under water is not consistent but only
sometimes.

small tiny bubbles and not big ones.

I have also increased the temp to 27c

Might be too early to say its RI since wheezing could be heavy breathing (from a overweight turtle) and bubbles could just be escaping from his mouth/lungs. Any other symptoms? Excessive basking, change of appetite...???

Well he seems to be fine and active when his in the water and does eat
and bask.

I will take him to my local RSPCA or Vet just to double check he is fine and that
he is in tip top shape on the safe side.

It's only some times i hear sounds from him but not all the time.

It will be a great addition to add sound clips of when RES's are ill and
make noise's and also put what the noise is.

This will give some off us some sort of help as to weather if are RES are
wheezing or coughing etc..

Regards, Jagz

PS: Love the new updated site as well - so much information and help.

Please could you also put in the Temperature section for RES's
what is the best temp and also how much to up the Temp when RES's are
ill depending on the illness.

There is a spot for that info already: www.redearslider.com/sick_turtle.html

The sitemap lists all the content of the main site.

Sounds... and pictures as well, can't always clearly communicate what is going on. Various symptoms overlap each other, so it is always recommended to consult a vet if there are any concerns.
