General Care Discussion :: Can Turtles Throw Up?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I gave Squirt a couple of pieces of shredded carrot last night which he devoured. This morning I find lots of carrot pieces at the bottom of his tank which were not there last night. Did he throw up? He seems to be really quiet today just walking around with his eyes closed.
Please tell me he's not sick! :(

He might have pooped them out. Did you find any poop? Was it solid or runny?

nope no poop. There were alot of them that looked pretty much like they did going in. I know he ate what I gave him. And I always get my little net and do a sweep before I go to bed at night to clean up any poop or stuff that has settled to the bottom so the tank was clean last night at about 10 pm.

When I feed my turts carrot peels, I often find orange poop in the tank. When it breaks apart, it looks just like little pieces of carrot that had been eaten.

Hi Marisa,
Thanx for your reply. I have found that before but this was like all the carrots he had eaten. I am wondering if i gave him too much? I gave him like 4 or 5 pieces, they were pretty good size. What I found this morning looked like the pieces were chewed as if they fell to the bottom of the tank. Does that make sense. They were pretty big pieces. I just don't know what to make of it and with him being really low key today I'm wondering if he's got an upset stomach.
Oh boy did I make my poor guy sick?
Just a little worried.................

Don't know how big the pieces were, but if they look chewed, they could be leftovers. Try making some thin peels (they look a little like worms) and throw a few in the tank.

He could've also pooped and then started eating it again. Which would explain the teeth marks.

If there is no foul smell to it then it was thrown up.

I don't know...my painteds can poop things like carrots, yams, sweet potatoes, and really, it just looks like the veggies in little pieces with no smell at all.

The smell test works for me :P I usually spot them quickly, so I guess they have a much stronger odor when they're..um.... fresh.

Thank you all so much for your help. When I got home, my guy was doing much better, eyes were open and he was more active and even ate a little. So all's well I think. I won't be feeding him huge pieces of carrots he just goes wild.
It could have been thown up as there was no smell. LOL. So I'll put it down to that and keep an eye on him. I never thought such a little thing could throw up such big chunks!
Thanx again for all the help! It's appreciated!
