General Care Discussion :: under water heater question!!!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Sep 02, 2007 8:43 pm   under water heater question!!!

I just bought a new aqurium for my turtle Turbo. I have run across a problem in the instuctions for the under water heater. It says that the water line on the heater must be under water at all times but the picture shows the whole heater under water. Well I have place the whole thing under water and I am afraid to plug it in now due to not knowing if it is ok completly submerged. Any info please help me out...Thanks

Do you know the brand of the heater, or do you have a link for it? It's a great idea to set up your tank first, before putting your turt in, good job!

You're correct to have the heater fully submerged. If any of it is above water the coils can explode, so it's important to keep it under.

I bought a aqurium kit from walmart. so everthing in the kit is made by AQUA CULTURE. I know it is not the top of the line but it is the best i could do right now

The water is 80 degrees out of the tap?? Did you fill it from the cold water faucet or did you use hot water? Hot water out of the tap is generally not as clean as the cold water. Also if the water temp is higher than the heater is set at, it won't come on, so you still won't know if it is safe or not. And submerging a heater that is not meant to be fully submerged might not leak right away but will leak eventually causing an electrical problem later on down the road.

I used cold water when i filled the tank earlier today and it was 80 for about 2 hours but now it is 78. I didn't plan on putting Turbo into the tank until atleast 24 hours but also until i know the temp is stable
